Where were the talking heads?

During the RNC we saw a lot of filler by Rachel and Chris and friends. They were constantly explaining, embellishing, making interesting Maddow quips. Last night or First night there was little of that. It was not needed as filler because one speaker led to the next. Timing must be important in a convention?
